Utilizing Delivery Motorcycles for Infrastructure Management NTT East and NTT ME Participate in a Field Trial

NTT East and NTT ME (collectively, the “NTT East Group”) are partnering with Japan Post Holdings and Japan Post Co., Ltd. to participate in a field trial focused on infrastructure management, utilizing motorcycles used by post offices for mail collection and delivery.
In this trial, Japan Post’s delivery motorcycles will be equipped with dashcams to capture images and location data while in transit. The collected data will undergo processing—including the masking of personally identifiable information—before being analyzed to identify anomalies in infrastructure facilities and assess the conditions surrounding them. Furthermore, the trial will evaluate whether this data can serve as a foundational resource for on-site verification, inspection, and repair of infrastructure facilities.
Regional infrastructure—such as roads and telecommunications networks—requires efficient and sustainable maintenance, particularly in light of challenges like aging assets, a shortage of skilled personnel, and increasing disaster risks.
While the NTT East Group conducts daily inspections and maintenance of the infrastructure that supports its telecommunications services (such as utility poles and cables), it faces the dual challenge of aging equipment and a scarcity of maintenance staff. Consequently, there is a pressing need to establish maintenance methods that can monitor the areas surrounding infrastructure facilities more broadly and efficiently.
Against this backdrop, the field trial aims to explore the potential for a new system that leverages digital technology and data gathered through routine, everyday local activities to support the maintenance and management of regional infrastructure.
