NTT docomo Business to Drive Next Growth Through AI Implementation Capabilities

小島社長(President Kojima)

NTT docomo Business announced its growth strategy for 2030 on September 28th (Monday).

The theme is “People-Oriented AX, Leveraging AI Implementation Capabilities for Next Growth.”

President Katsushige Kojima stated, “AI is evolving from a tool to support operations to a force that drives industries and local communities. What is needed is AI implementation capability.” As a platform provider for industrial and regional AX supporting an autonomous, decentralized, and collaborative society, the company outlined a policy to provide end-to-end support, from secure AI implementation and operation to results generation.

NTT docomo Business had set a target of 2 trillion yen in operating revenue, which it achieved in fiscal year 2025. Currently, it is striving towards 2.6 trillion yen in operating revenue by fiscal year 2030.

NTT docomo Business aims to expand its four key areas (AI, IoT, Digital BPO, and Regional/SME DX) to a scale of 700 billion yen by fiscal year 2030.

The pillars of the strategy remain the same as before: “Platform Evolution,” “Strengthening of Four Key Areas,” and “Strengthening of Partnering,” but the scope of each initiative will be broadened.

Under “Platform Evolution,” the keywords are “Trusted AI/Data,” “Distributed Computing,” and “AI Ops/FinOps.”

In the AI era, distributed computing will be particularly important, and the ability of GPUs to flexibly process data will be indispensable. Therefore, the company offers GPUaaS. This allows for the use of a single controller by combining GPUs provided on the cloud and GPUs provided on a dedicated basis.

Under “Strengthening of Four Key Areas,” particular emphasis will be placed on AI implementation capabilities and security measures.

In recent years, FDE (Field Development Engineer) services that support AI implementation on-site have been attracting attention. The company also provides AI implementation support using advanced FDE for large corporations. On the other hand, small and medium-sized enterprises in regional areas have AI needs but limited in-house personnel and difficulty accessing external support.

President Kojima stated, “Our strength lies in our nationwide network of AI-utilizing personnel who can provide on-site support. We will work closely with local communities and small and medium-sized enterprises to support the introduction, utilization, and establishment of AI.”

Based on a base of approximately 14,000 AI-utilizing personnel across Japan, 5,000 are designated as FDE Lite to support customers’ AI utilization. Furthermore, the company plans to expand its industry-specific FDEs for large corporations to over 1,000 by 2027.

Regarding “strengthening partnering,” the company is focusing on its AI infrastructure, the “AI-Centric ICT Platform.” For example, it has entered into comprehensive partnership agreements with Kikuyo Town and Chitose City in Kumamoto Prefecture to promote the development of future cities.

By leveraging AI talent and combining the strengths of its partners and platform, the company will support the realization of AI concepts envisioned by local communities.
