Omron Healthcare and Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine Graduate School of Medicine, Department of Cardiovascular Medicine conducted a demonstration study aimed at preventing heart failure patients using ICT. Heart failure patients shared vital data measured at home using Omron Healthcare’s upper arm blood pressure monitor with electrocardiogram and communication function weight scale with medical institutions via the smartphone health management app “Omron Connect”. We verified whether medical professionals can understand the patient’s condition from the shared data and intervene appropriately as needed to prevent heart failure from worsening.

Nursing staff (nurses, cardiology certified nurses, heart failure medical instructors) checked daily changes in vital data measured by heart failure patients at home, and if worsening heart failure was suspected, they contacted the patient by phone and encouraged them to visit a doctor. As a result, signs of worsening heart failure were detected in 11 of 21 heart failure patients, leading to early treatment intervention. In addition, the rate of continued measurement over a three-month period was high at over 90%, and 86% of respondents said they were “highly satisfied” with the medical treatment using vital sign data at home.
