Suzuki and Soracom conduct demonstration experiments using IoT to use electric wheelchairs on robot undercarriage

Suzuki and Soracom are working on demonstration experiments using IoT to commercialize an “electric mobility base unit” that provides the undercarriage of robots by applying electric wheelchair technology.
The electric mobility base unit was developed with the aim of becoming the undercarriage of a variety of robots, utilizing the mobility technology such as maneuverability and stability that Suzuki has cultivated over many years of developing electric wheelchairs. By combining various technologies such as autonomous driving and AI with this robot’s undercarriage, partners aim to solve problems in various fields such as logistics, snow removal, civil engineering and construction, and measurement and monitoring using robots with partners.
In this demonstration experiment, a communication module and IoT platform SORACOM are used in the electric mobility base unit, and vehicle operating status and GPS location information are linked to the cloud in real time. The aim is to visualize how the electric mobility base unit is used and use it in future product development. They will also work on considering services such as support and maintenance.
The two companies signed an agreement in February last year to utilize advanced IoT technology in the mobility services field.
