NTT and Toyota develop “Mobility AI Platform” IOWN to achieve a society with zero traffic accidents
NTT and Toyota are working together on AI and communications in the mobility field to achieve a society with zero traffic accidents.
Specifically, they are promoting the development of a “Mobility AI Platform” that links AI, communications, and vehicles. The Mobility AI Platform is composed of three platforms.
The first is a “distributed computing platform.” According to Toyota’s calculations, if “SDVs (Software Defined Vehicles),” which prioritize safety and security, become widespread, the amount of communication required in 2030 will be 22 times that of the current amount, and the computing resources will be 150 times that of the current amount.
Toyota President Tsuneji Sato said, “We will utilize NTT’s IOWN to set up data centers in a distributed manner to support this enormous amount of calculation.”
The second is an “intelligent communications platform.” AI will determine the optimal communication method in real time according to the traffic environment, creating a high-speed, seamless communications platform necessary for infrastructure cooperation.
The third is an “AI platform.” AI models will be created from data collected using computing resources and the communications infrastructure, and various services such as autonomous driving and AI agents will be produced, leading to the creation of new value.
First, the computing infrastructure will be built in a domestic data center and connected via IOWN. This will become a distributed computing infrastructure that accumulates and processes huge amounts of data collected from vehicles and other sources.
To collect data from vehicles and other sources in real time, AI will select the optimal communications method, seamlessly linking people, mobility, and infrastructure. This will achieve zero traffic accidents, advanced autonomous driving, and AI agents that are supportive of people.
The companies plan to begin implementing the mobility AI infrastructure in society in 2028, with the aim of expanding its use from 2030 onwards.
The two companies plan to invest around 500 billion yen by 2030.
NTT President Akira Shimada said, “We want to change the future of cars with AI and communications. IOWN, which enables massive data processing at high speed and with low power consumption, will function as a social infrastructure that enriches people’s lives by integrating mobility and information and communications. We want to evolve this initiative together with our two companies and increase the number of people who support it.”
