On May 12, Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo held ”Ogura Hyakunin Isshu Competition Karuta Master vs. Queen Dream Match 2024” at the Bunkyo Civic Center. This is the third dream match.
Bunkyo Ward is home to the headquarters of the All Japan Karuta Association. There is also the Karuta Memorial Otsuka Hall, where many karuta-related tournaments are held. Competitive karuta is also said to have originated from a karuta competition started by students at the University of Tokyo in Bunkyo Ward during the Meiji period.
For this reason, Bunkyo Ward positions karuta as a new cultural resource and is developing a variety of projects to widely promote the appeal of ”Bunkyo, the City of Karuta.”
