Succeeded in creating 3D maps of seaweed beds using underwater drones Nagasaki University

Nagasaki University Marine Future Innovation Institute, Nagasaki University Graduate School of Engineering, and INFLUX (Minato-ku, Tokyo, President Atsushi Hoshino, Influx) are jointly working on “weed bed regeneration” that aims to balance marine environmental conservation and renewable energy development. Joint research is underway. As part of this effort, the next-generation underwater drone “Aqualemona” has successfully created a 3D map of “weed beds.” This drone is equipped with a function that allows it to stably control the measurement position even under the sea, without being affected by tidal currents.
This result will enable us to accurately investigate the status of seaweed beds over a wide range of areas and improve the efficiency of seaweed bed restoration projects. In addition, by understanding the accurate distribution of seaweed beds from 3D maps, the accuracy of measuring the amount of CO2 absorbed by seaweed will increase, and business opportunities for blue carbon trading will expand, expanding the possibility of revitalizing sustainable marine businesses.
