Green cars will be introduced on JR East’s Chuo Line rapid trains. From next year onwards, you will be able to use it by paying an additional fee. The central line is really long. It takes over an hour to get to Tokyo Station from Takao, and just under 1:30 from Otsuki. Being able to commute to work or school while sitting down makes it easier both physically and mentally. JR East is probably aiming to secure a source of revenue amid a declining population, but it is also likely to have the effect of dispersing the population, which tends to be concentrated in the city center, to other areas. It would be exciting if this kind of movement spreads along all lines and a decentralized society is formed as a result. (Kei)
