Real-time detection of potholes on the road surface Toshiba
Toshiba and Toshiba Digital Solutions have developed a road surface deformation detection AI that can detect potholes on expressways in real time and with high precision, and are working with NEXCO Central Japan to develop this technology. The effectiveness of this AI technology was verified in a demonstration experiment aimed at increasing the sophistication of daily expressway inspections.
The road surface deformation detection AI developed by Toshiba and Toshiba Digital Solutions is the first in the world to apply a weakly supervised learning method to detect potholes, and it can detect the deformation location in an image by simply selecting and learning the presence or absence of deformation. estimated. By using weakly supervised learning, the teaching time per image can be reduced to about 1/100, from about 1 minute 40 seconds to about 1 second compared to conventional methods, reducing the workload at the time of introduction. In addition to reducing traffic congestion, it will also be possible to easily introduce AI on different roads.
In addition to automating and labor-saving daily inspections of expressways, it also enables the early detection of potholes that require emergency repairs, contributing to the maintenance and long-term stable operation of expressways.
