Supporting comfortable living through power saving NTT innovative devices

塚野社長(President Tsukano)

NTT innovative devices has started in earnest. This company manufactures optoelectronic convergence devices, which are the core of NTT’s IOWN. They are a business company that handles everything from design and development to manufacturing and sales.
In June, a spin-off company was established by cutting out a group at NTT Laboratories that researched optoelectronic convergence technology. In August, the company merged with NTT Electronics (NEL) to create the new NTT innovative devices. The company is a 100% subsidiary of NTT. The number of employees is 566 at the main unit and 1,148 in total in the group. There are four group companies in Japan and five overseas.
A photoelectric convergence device is a device that enables computer and network signal processing to be performed using light rather than electricity.
Simply put, the more people use digital technologies such as the Internet and AI to make their lives more convenient, the larger their data centers and other IT infrastructures become, and the more electricity they use. Using electricity generates heat. As a result, it promotes global warming. By utilizing optoelectronic convergence devices, it is possible to reduce the increasing amount of electricity consumed by making life more comfortable and convenient.
NTT innovative devices’s president, Hidehiro Tsukano, says”We would like to replace electricity with light as much as possible.By doing so, we would like to contribute to NTT’s IOWN goal and contribute to carbon neutrality”.
Applications are expected to include communications infrastructure and data centers. In the future, they are looking at the server field, then the automobile field, and beyond that, they are also looking at PCs and mobile devices.
It is also planned to be exhibited at the Osaka/Kansai Expo in 2025.
The company aims to achieve operating revenue of 100 billion yen as soon as possible.
President Tsukano said, ”We would like to expand the market by pursuing scale by expanding the range of applications and increasing the number of applications. In order to expand the market, we must reduce costs accordingly. We will also need to pursue mass production. We recognize that unless we do this, the scale of our business will not grow dramatically”.
