Mitsubishi Motors and Hitachi, Ltd. have begun joint demonstrations of “Battery Cube,” a movable storage battery that utilizes used lithium-ion batteries from electric vehicles, with the aim of realizing a circular economy for batteries installed in electric vehicles.
In this demonstration, a reused battery from the plug-in hybrid EV “Outlander PHEV” sold by Mitsubishi Motors will be installed in a battery cube and its practicality will be verified.
Specifically, in anticipation of power outages due to wide-area disasters, Hitachi Building Systems
Mitsubishi Motors and Hitachi each aim to start reusing electric vehicle batteries and commercializing battery cubes next fiscal year, and will work together to promote the introduction of battery cubes to companies and local governments. In addition, in order to make effective use of renewable energy, we will conduct joint demonstrations of energy management that links electric vehicles, battery cubes, and solar panels.
