Kansai Electric Power and CyrusOne launch HSDC business in Japan
Kansai Electric Power and US CyrusOne will jointly establish “Kansai Electric Power Cyrus One Co., Ltd.”
The new company will be established as a fifty-fifty joint venture to develop and operate hyperscale data centers (HSDC). First, we will expand our business in the Tokyo metropolitan area and the Kansai area.
As the first project, we have secured a construction site in the Kansai area and are preparing to start construction as soon as possible. Over the next 10 years, we will invest more than 1 trillion yen and aim for a business scale with a total power receiving capacity of 900 MW (megawatts).
CyrusOne is a data center development and operation company with sales capabilities and know-how on design, development and operation in the HSDC business.
“Japan is one of the largest data center markets in the Asia-Pacific region, with advanced technological infrastructure and high internet utilization,” said Eric Schwartz, President of CyrusOne. Demand for data centers is steadily increasing. This time, we will be able to combine data and power in a way that is different from the past by leveraging the strengths of both companies.”
This is the first time for CyrusOne to collaborate with a power company.
President Schwartz said, “What I expect from Kansai Electric Power is its operational expertise, design capabilities, and understanding of the Japanese market environment.”
Japan’s population is declining and its economic growth rate is not high. Still, he said he is entering the Japanese market because Japan is advancing rapidly in terms of adoption of digital technology, and it is expected to continue in the future.
CyrusOne uses renewable energy in all data centers in Europe. In Japan, it is a policy to work together with Kansai Electric Power Co., Ltd. to optimize the power supply.
