Drones to Enhance Power Transmission Equipment Maintenance Fujitsu and Chugoku Electric Power Network

Fujitsu and Chugoku Electric Power Network have entered into a licensing agreement for Chugoku Electric Power Network’s dynamic rating technology and intellectual property related to advanced power transmission equipment maintenance, with the aim of expanding the introduction of renewable energy and developing services that enhance power transmission equipment maintenance through the use of drones.

Under this agreement, Fujitsu will leverage Chugoku Electric Power Network’s intellectual property to provide advanced power transmission grid operation and maintenance support services to power transmission and distribution companies, enabling the safe and maximum connection and utilization of renewable energy to the power grid.

This service combines Chugoku Electric Power Network’s intellectual property related to dynamic rating technology and power transmission equipment operation and maintenance, cultivated through demonstration tests and actual operations, with Fujitsu’s optical fiber sensing, data analysis, and AI technologies.

Vibration data is acquired from optical fibers laid in the power transmission lines, and based on environmental data such as wind conditions around the power transmission lines obtained by converting this vibration data, the power transmission capacity that can be transmitted according to the equipment condition at that time is calculated.

Furthermore, by using AI to learn and infer from the acquired data, it becomes possible to predict future wind conditions around power transmission lines and transmission capacity.

Utilizing the data obtained from the basic functions, we will also provide support tailored to the operations and challenges of power transmission and distribution companies.

Specifically, we will build operational designs and systems for applying dynamic rating technology, which reduces the curtailment of renewable energy output and leads to the effective use of generated electricity. In addition, we will utilize wind condition data around power transmission lines to determine whether drone flights are possible and to select flight routes that take wind conditions into account. Furthermore, by understanding the condition of equipment from vibration data, we will support the streamlining and advancement of maintenance operations that have previously relied on on-site work and manual labor.
