Visualizing Changes in the Tear Film During VR Gaming Waseda University

VRゴーグルに搭載した涙液層観察システム(Tear film observation system installed in VR goggles)

Waseda University’s Faculty of Human Sciences and Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine developed a system for observing the tear film during VR headset use and investigated the state of the tear film during gameplay. Results showed that the tear lipid layer interference image grade increased with the passage of play time. The surface temperatures of the cornea and eyelids also increased before and after play. The increase in the interference image grade indicates an increase in the tear lipid layer thickness.
By developing a tear film observation system equipped with an ultra-compact camera and lighting equipment, we were able to visualize changes in the tear lipid layer within a VR headset. This is expected to provide guidelines for the safe design and use of VR headsets. It may also help elucidate the mechanism for preventing dry eye during VR use.
