The stabbing death of a child attending a Japanese school in Shenzhen is still fresh in our memory, but there have been a series of stabbing incidents in public places in China. When the economy is in a recession, there are always people looking for an outlet for their frustrations and assaulting those in a weaker position. At the time of the stabbing incident, some saw it as a tragedy brought about by China’s patriotic education, but in reality it was an outlet for frustrations, and patriotism was merely an excuse. There are some movements in Japan to promote patriotic education, but its ideology is the same Confucian spirit as in China. It would be good if crimes under the guise of patriotism did not occur in Japan. (Kei)
